Czech Interior Ministry goes live with fully-digital immigration platform
The Czech Republic has officially entered the era of paper-free immigration. At midnight on 1 January 2026 the Interior Ministry switched on the Foreigners Information System (FIS), the technological centre-piece of the new Act on the Stay of Foreigners. Foreign nationals must now create a secure on-line “Foreigner Account”, linked to their Czech electronic identity (e-ID), through which they complete smart forms, upload employment contracts, pay government fees and track real-time case status. Only a single in-person visit is still required for fingerprints and a biometric photograph. (visahq.com)

For corporate mobility managers the change is a potential game-changer. End-to-end digital processing replaces the patchwork of e-mails, paper applications and physical pickups that previously stretched an employee-card filing over eight to ten weeks. Large employers who pilot-tested the system report average processing times falling below six weeks and a 40 % reduction in courier costs. The platform also pushes automated reminders three months before permit expiry, helping HR teams avoid costly lapses in work authorisation.

To help organisations capitalise on these efficiencies, VisaHQ’s Prague-based specialists can set up Foreigner Accounts, pre-validate uploads and chase electronic updates in FIS, acting as an extension of your mobility team. Their step-by-step guidance at https://www.visahq.com/czech-republic/ keeps applicants compliant while freeing HR to focus on strategy.

The law introduces new compliance guard-rails as well. Because the account is tied to the applicant’s e-ID, every log-in time-stamps the individual user; fraudulent intermediaries will find it harder to masquerade as the applicant. The ministry can now audit uploads centrally, and incomplete filings are returned electronically rather than by post, shaving days off the correction loop. Employers acting as “guarantors” must also register in the system and will receive electronic notices if their assignees miss document deadlines.

Practical tips: 1) encourage foreign staff to activate their e-ID at a CzechPoint office before launching any application; 2) move internal approval workflows on-line so that labour contracts and university diplomas are ready for instant upload; 3) update privacy notices—personal data submitted through FIS is stored on Czech government servers for ten years.

While the roll-out went smoothly, peak-hour slow-downs were reported on 9 January as thousands of users logged in simultaneously. The ministry says extra server capacity has now been allocated, but mobility teams are advised to stagger filings outside of the 09:00-11:00 window until traffic stabilises.
