Eurostat migration yearbook highlights Cyprus’ sharp fall in asylum claims and rising skills inflows

Eurostat migration yearbook highlights Cyprus’ sharp fall in asylum claims and rising skills inflows
To mark International Migrants Day, Eurostat released its interactive publication “Migration and Asylum in Europe 2025” on 18 December. The dataset confirms Cyprus’ headline trends: asylum applications fell 52 % between 2022 and 2024, while first-residence permits for employment rose 18 % over the same period—one of the highest increases in the EU.

The shift reflects Nicosia’s twin policies of tightening Green Line surveillance and courting skilled workers via pathways such as the Digital Nomad Visa and the headquartering scheme for non-EU companies. Eurostat also notes that 14 % of Cyprus’ population in 2024 were non-EU citizens—the third-highest share in the bloc after Luxembourg and Malta.

For companies and individuals navigating this evolving visa landscape, VisaHQ can streamline applications for Cyprus’s Digital Nomad, employment and other residence permits. Its online platform (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) offers step-by-step guidance, real-time status tracking and local expertise, helping HR teams and assignees avoid delays and compliance pitfalls.

For global employers, the findings corroborate Cyprus’ reputation as an accessible EU base for tech and professional-services talent. However, the data also spotlight integration challenges: non-EU residents have an unemployment rate nearly double that of Cypriot nationals, underlining the importance of the new integration strategy currently in consultation.

Eurostat’s interactive dashboards allow HR teams to benchmark Cyprus against other relocation hubs on indicators such as permit processing times, recognition of qualifications and long-term residence uptake, helping refine site-selection and assignment decisions for 2026.
