EU funds €435 k upgrade of Agios Dometios crossing to cut congestion

EU funds €435 k upgrade of Agios Dometios crossing to cut congestion
The European Union has approved two contracts worth nearly €435,000 to widen lanes, add pedestrian canopies and install new lighting at the Agios Dometios (“Metehan”) crossing—Nicosia’s busiest checkpoint between the Republic of Cyprus and the island’s Turkish-Cypriot north. Construction started on 4 December and is scheduled to finish before the end of January 2026.

Implemented by the UN Development Programme, the project will excavate bottleneck areas inside the buffer zone, re-pave the vehicle deck and integrate smart traffic sensors that feed queue-length data to a public website. Officials expect average wait times—which can peak at 45 minutes during the Monday-morning commute—to be halved.

The upgrade is financed under the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish-Cypriot community, aimed at boosting economic integration and person-to-person contact. Mobility managers note that the crossing handles thousands of hospitality and construction workers who live in the north but work in the south, as well as tourists using hire-cars to explore both sides of the island.

For travellers who need clarity on what documents they must carry when moving between the island’s two administrations, VisaHQ can help. The company’s Cyprus portal (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) lists current entry requirements and offers step-by-step assistance with visa or travel-authorisation applications, streamlining cross-border planning for commuters, businesses and holidaymakers alike.

Project leaders say disruption will be minimal: works take place overnight, and temporary pedestrian corridors will keep foot traffic moving. Businesses with cross-border staff are advised to adjust rosters in early January, when resurfacing is expected to close two lanes for 48 hours.

Once finished, the crossing will connect to Cyprus’ new queue-monitoring API—allowing travel-apps to display live waiting times alongside border-document requirements, making life easier for commuters and visiting executives alike.
