VINCI Tests Europe’s First In-Traffic Wireless-Charging Motorway Near Paris

VINCI Tests Europe’s First In-Traffic Wireless-Charging Motorway Near Paris
French concessionaire VINCI Autoroutes has switched on a 1.5-kilometre test segment of the A10 motorway that can charge compatible electric vehicles while they are moving at normal speeds. The pilot—officially inaugurated on 25 November—uses inductive coils embedded in the asphalt and receiver plates fitted beneath test vehicles. Israeli tech firm Electreon supplies the hardware, joined by Gustave Eiffel University, Hutchinson and VINCI Construction.

Why it matters for mobile workforces. Dynamic charging could slash ‘range anxiety’ for business travellers and logistics operators who criss-cross France’s high-traffic corridors. For assignees with long daily commutes or clients scattered across the country, the ability to top up en route promises shorter dwell times at stationary chargers and more predictable journey planning.

Technical and regulatory hurdles. • Power transfer is currently capped at 70 kW to limit electromagnetic emissions; raising that limit will require regulatory clearance from ANFR, France’s radio-frequency watchdog. • The pilot operates on a dedicated lane marked by overhead gantries; any national roll-out would need new road-signage standards and a tolling model that can meter electricity by distance driven.

Business angle. Auto-OEMs such as Stellantis and Renault have observed the trial, eyeing factory-fit receiver options for 2028 model years. Leasing firms that manage expatriate company cars are also exploring add-on receiver retrofits that could be bundled into long-term contracts.

Next steps. VINCI will run the test with passenger cars and light-duty vans through Q4 2026 to gather data on wear, weather resistance and billing. A parallel study with refrigerated HGVs—critical for France’s export-heavy agrifood sector—starts in spring 2026.
