EU Awards €5.6 Million to Electrify Helsinki-Vantaa Aprons Ahead of 2028 Deadline

EU Awards €5.6 Million to Electrify Helsinki-Vantaa Aprons Ahead of 2028 Deadline
Finavia has secured up to €5.6 million in European funding to electrify passenger-boarding-bridge stands at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, covering roughly 30 percent of an €18.75 million project scheduled for completion by 2028 – two years ahead of an EU mandate for large hubs. Fixed ground-power units and pre-conditioned-air systems will let aircraft shut down auxiliary power units, cutting CO₂, NOx and particulate emissions while trimming ramp noise.

The project is central to Finavia’s strategy to decarbonise scope-3 emissions after achieving net-zero in its own operations in 2024. Electrification will be paired with on-site renewable generation and storage to manage peak demand and prepare for hybrid-electric ground-service equipment. Infrastructure chief Jani Jolkkonen called the scheme “one of the company’s most significant environmental investments of recent years.”

For airlines and travel managers the upgrade promises quieter turn-arounds, cleaner gate areas and potentially lower apron surcharges as EU regulators shift cost burdens onto polluters. Companies with ESG targets may increasingly favour Helsinki for meetings and transfers, knowing their staff’s travel footprint can be demonstrably reduced even while aircraft are on the ground.

Finavia’s proactive stance positions the airport to capture growth from carriers keen to burnish green credentials – a useful hedge as corporate procurement departments add sustainability metrics to airline-selection criteria. Mobility teams should track whether Finavia introduces emissions-linked rebates that could feed directly into carbon-budget reporting for global assignees.
