BMEIA Heightens Terror-Risk Advisory for Maldives Capital, Recommends Extra Vigilance for Austrian Tourists

BMEIA Heightens Terror-Risk Advisory for Maldives Capital, Recommends Extra Vigilance for Austrian Tourists
With the Christmas peak-season approaching, Austria’s Foreign Ministry updated its travel information for the Maldives on 19 November 2025. While the popular resort islands remain classified as Security Level 2, the capital Malé is now listed as Level 3 (high risk) following two foiled bomb plots against local police stations earlier this month.

The advisory is significant for Austria’s outbound tourism market: more than 24,000 Austrians visited the archipelago in 2024 and bookings for winter 2025/26 are up 18 %, according to TUI Austria. Tour operators must now brief clients that day trips to Malé or local-island guesthouses carry heightened risk. Packages that include overnight stays in the capital may face higher travel-insurance premiums.

The notice also reminds travellers that a Traveller Declaration must be submitted online within 96 hours before arrival and departure, and that overstays incur fines starting at USD 100. Mobility managers organising incentive trips should build in additional time for digital health declarations and be prepared for random bag checks at Velana International Airport.

Austrian underwriters such as Europäische Reiseversicherung confirm that policies remain valid but urge tourists to use registered excursion providers only. Employers approving “bleisure” extensions should record the new risk classification in duty-of-care logs and require staff to share live itineraries.

Consular officials in New Delhi—the embassy responsible for Maldives—advise Austrian citizens to sign up for the Auslandsservice app to receive push notifications of any security incident.
