Spanish flag-carrier Iberia announced it will launch a five-times-weekly summer service between Madrid Barajas and Toronto Pearson starting 13 June 2026, operated by 182-seat Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The narrow-body long-range jet will offer 14 business-class seats and 168 in economy, departing Madrid at noon and arriving in Toronto mid-afternoon.
Toronto will become Iberia’s sole Canadian destination and the 49th city in its global network, complementing British Airways’ and Aer Lingus’s oneworld trans-Atlantic joint venture. For Canadian corporates with Iberian operations, the route provides a non-stop alternative to connections via London or Paris and may reduce total journey time by up to three hours.
The A321XLR’s economics allow Iberia to profitably serve “thin” long-haul markets. Analysts expect Air Canada and WestJet to monitor bookings closely; Iberia’s entry could trigger a fare-war in the YYZ–Europe leisure segment next summer. Travel managers should watch for promotional business-class pricing in the CAD 2,900–3,200 range return.
Although the inaugural flight is 18 months away, advance sales open later this week. Companies with Spanish subsidiaries should update preferred-carrier lists, while HR teams may need to adjust per-diem budgets to account for increased travel volume between headquarters and Madrid.
