FCDO tightens India travel advice after Delhi Red Fort bombing

FCDO tightens India travel advice after Delhi Red Fort bombing
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its India travel advice late on 12 November following a car-bomb explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro station that killed 12 people. The advisory urges British nationals to avoid the immediate area, remain vigilant in crowded places and follow local-authority instructions.

While the overall advice level for India (‘exercise a high degree of caution’) remains unchanged, the FCDO highlights elevated risks along the India–Pakistan border and warns that travelling against official advice may invalidate travel insurance. HR and travel-risk managers should brief employees with upcoming trips to Delhi or Jammu & Kashmir, ensuring itinerary reviews and alternative routing where feasible.

Companies operating International SOS or Crisis24 programmes should update country risk profiles and confirm that emergency-assistance numbers are programmed into travellers’ phones. Employers must also remember their legal duty of care: a failure to heed FCDO warnings can create liability exposure if an incident occurs.

The advisory is expected to be reviewed again once the Delhi Police complete their investigation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Mobility teams should monitor the FCDO website and airline notices for any escalation that could trigger flight cancellations or new entry restrictions.
