EU statistics: Czechia still third-largest host of Ukrainians as temporary-protection grants surge

EU statistics: Czechia still third-largest host of Ukrainians as temporary-protection grants surge
Fresh Eurostat figures published on 10 November reveal that EU member states issued 79 205 new temporary-protection decisions to people fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in September – the highest monthly total in two years. Czechia accounted for 389 310 beneficiaries, cementing its position as the third-largest host after Germany and Poland.

Analysts attribute the 49 % EU-wide spike to Kyiv’s late-August decree temporarily allowing men aged 18-22 to leave the country. Czech processing centres in Prague-Vysočany and Brno-Tuřany report longer queues, and the Interior Ministry is redeploying staff from lower-volume offices in Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem to keep waiting times under 14 days.

For companies the data translate into a deeper talent pool. Around 55 % of Ukrainian protection holders in Czechia are of working age and more than one-third possess tertiary education, according to the Labour Office. Employers in construction, logistics and IT continue to tap this resource via accelerated work-authorisation channels introduced under Lex Ukrajina VII, but competition is intensifying, especially in Prague.

Mobility managers should note that temporary-protection stickers must be extended again in early 2026. The ministry plans to open online preregistration in January and warns that failure to reserve an appointment will invalidate health-insurance coverage. HR teams should begin collating employment contracts and proof of accommodation so that employees can renew status seamlessly.

Longer term, the government is drafting Lex Ukrajina VIII, which could phase out universal humanitarian allowances and link support to Czech-language study or salaried employment. Businesses employing protection holders may therefore see stronger incentives for up-skilling and permanent residency applications.
