GOL seeks fifth-freedom rights for Miami–Asunción triangle, eyeing world’s longest 737 MAX leg

GOL seeks fifth-freedom rights for Miami–Asunción triangle, eyeing world’s longest 737 MAX leg
Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has formally asked Paraguay’s aviation authority (DINAC) for fifth-freedom traffic rights that would allow it to sell seats and cargo on a proposed Miami–Asunción sector operated as part of triangle flights originating in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. The request, filed on 13 February, would create a four-times-weekly service starting 8 June 2026 and, at 6 154 km, would become the longest Boeing 737 MAX route in the world.

Phase one covers a Brasília–Miami–Asunción rotation; phase two would add a Rio de Janeiro leg that may route Rio–Asunción–Miami to respect the MAX’s range envelope. The venture leverages open-skies clauses in the Brazil-Paraguay and Brazil-US bilateral agreements and deepens GOL’s partnership with American Airlines at MIA, offering onward connectivity across North America.

For travellers keen to capitalise on this new connectivity, sorting out travel documents in advance will be essential. VisaHQ’s streamlined online portal (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) helps passengers and corporate mobility managers secure visas for Brazil, Paraguay, the United States and many other destinations, smoothing the path for both business trips and cargo-accompanied travel along the proposed route.

For corporate-mobility planners, the triangle unlocks non-stop freight capacity between Paraguay’s capital and Florida—valuable for agribusiness exporters—and gives Brazilian executives an alternative to indirect itineraries via Panama or São Paulo. However, tickets cannot go on sale until regulators in all three countries sign off, and union consultations on crew duty times for the ultra-long leg are still pending.

If approved, the route would strengthen Brazil’s role as a regional aviation hub, illustrating how fifth-freedom permutations can open new city pairs without additional wide-body aircraft. Competitors LATAM and Azul are expected to scrutinise the model closely, and US carriers could lobby for reciprocal rights into Brazil’s interior markets.
