SwissCommunity Schedules 4 November Webinar on Political Rights for Swiss Abroad

SwissCommunity Schedules 4 November Webinar on Political Rights for Swiss Abroad
Keeping expatriate voters engaged is a perennial challenge—and one that Switzerland tackles head-on. SwissCommunity, the umbrella organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA), has confirmed that its 2025 webinar series will culminate on 4 November 2025 with a live session entitled “Political Participation from Abroad: Opportunities and Challenges”.

The free, English-language webinar—developed jointly with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and risk-insurance cooperative Soliswiss—will explain how the planned expansion of e-voting pilots could give more than 800 000 Swiss citizens living overseas reliable digital access to federal ballots from 2027. Speakers from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) and cantonal chancellories will outline the security architecture, while legal experts will discuss how data-protection and domicile rules affect ballot validity.

For globally mobile Swiss professionals the session is more than civic housekeeping; it is a prerequisite for maintaining political voice while on long-term assignment. HR mobility teams often overlook the fact that being entered in the “Swiss Abroad” register can influence tax residence status, health-insurance obligations and even access to Swiss bank accounts. The webinar will provide a checklist that employers can circulate to expatriates when preparing relocation packs.

Registration opened on 4 November and capacity is limited to 1 000 log-ins. Recordings will be available later on the SwissCommunity portal, but live participants can pose questions on postal voting delays, digital ID and the forthcoming overhaul of the Swiss Abroad Act (due in Parliament in 2026).
