Polish Embassy in Abu Dhabi holds special ‘Passport Saturday’ for expatriates
Polish citizens living and working in the United Arab Emirates were given a one-day fast-track opportunity to renew travel documents on 25 October, as the embassy in Abu Dhabi hosted its first ‘Sobota Paszportowa’ (Passport Saturday). The consular-service drive allowed pre-registered applicants to submit biometric data and paperwork without taking leave from work during the week.

Demand has surged in the UAE’s 15,000-strong Polish community since COVID-era travel disruptions highlighted the need for up-to-date documents. Many executives on assignment with energy, aviation and defence companies in the Gulf also require six-to-12-month passport validity to obtain multiple-entry business visas for neighbouring states. Embassy staff said all appointment slots were booked within 48 hours of being published on the e-Konsulat platform.

The initiative reflects a broader digital-first strategy at Poland’s foreign ministry. Applicants completed most forms online, uploaded photos and paid fees electronically before arriving at the embassy, reducing in-person interaction to around ten minutes. Consul General Joanna Kowalska told media that similar Saturday clinics are planned for Doha and Riyadh early next year, responding to feedback from Polish professionals in the region.

For global-mobility managers, the event illustrates how host-country missions can ease administrative burdens on expatriates. Companies should monitor consular calendars and encourage employees to book early, as standard renewal appointments in Abu Dhabi currently run six weeks out. Passports processed on 25 October are expected to be ready for collection within three weeks, in time for December holiday travel.

Poland’s passport remains one of the world’s strongest, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 destinations. Ensuring staff maintain valid documents helps avoid last-minute travel disruptions and supports compliance with UAE residency-visa renewal rules, which require at least six-month passport validity.
