UK widens BN(O) visa route, letting adult children of Hongkongers apply on their own

UK widens BN(O) visa route, letting adult children of Hongkongers apply on their own
The United Kingdom has removed one of the biggest pain-points in its flagship British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) visa programme by allowing the adult children of BN(O) status-holders to file applications independently, together with their partners and any minor children.

The change, announced on 9 February 2026 by the Home Office hours after pro-democracy publisher Jimmy Lai received a 20-year prison term in Hong Kong, closes a loophole that had split thousands of families since the route launched in 2021. Until now, adult offspring who were older than 18 at the time of the 1997 hand-over could only move to Britain if they formed part of their parents’ main application and remained financially dependent on them.

Officials estimate the tweak will allow about 26,000 additional Hongkongers to relocate over the next five years, on top of the 230,000 visas already granted under the BN(O) pathway. Successful applicants receive five years’ limited leave, after which they may seek Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, 12 months later, British citizenship.

For those who find the application process daunting, VisaHQ’s Hong Kong team (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) can simplify every step—from document gathering and form reviews to priority submissions—helping BN(O) status-holders, their adult children and dependants keep pace with evolving Home Office requirements.

Business-mobility managers say the new eligibility rules will simplify workforce planning for multinationals that have been hiring BN(O) graduates but were previously forced to juggle Tier 2 sponsorship or other routes. However, questions remain over a separate Home Office proposal—still under consultation—to raise the English-language requirement to B2 level and impose higher minimum-income thresholds for ILR. Campaigners are urging ministers to exempt all BN(O) visa-holders so that today’s expansion is not undercut by tomorrow’s settlement barriers.

For companies running staff-relocation programmes, the immediate priority is to update immigration checklists, communicate the new standalone option to eligible employees and dependants, and review tax-equalisation policies to anticipate a larger UK-bound pipeline of Hong Kong talent.
