The University of St Andrews’ Student Immigration Service ran a one-hour online session on 6 November aimed at newcomers holding Student visas. Advisors explained the 20-hours-per-week term-time work limit, prohibition on self-employment and changes to National Insurance onboarding. Careers-Service staff highlighted internship pathways, while the Students’ Association shared volunteering opportunities that do not breach visa conditions.

The briefing responds to a sharp rise in visa compliance referrals across Scottish universities after the introduction of digital status checks and widened employer penalties. Mobility teams sending exchange students or researchers to the UK can request the slide deck to supplement pre-departure briefings.

Attendees were also reminded of the upcoming maintenance-fund increase and the need to retain payslips in case of Home Office audits.
