Track works shut Deutsche-Eck corridor, disrupting Austria–Germany rail links

Bauarbeiten by German infrastructure manager DB InfraGO forced a partial closure of the busy “Deutsche Eck” rail corridor on 3 November 2025, halting ÖBB and WESTbahn passenger services between Salzburg and Kufstein and triggering knock-on effects for connections to Munich, Innsbruck and Graz. The outage, scheduled to run through 5 November with additional blocks from 8–11 November, removes multiple daily inter-city and Railjet services.

WESTbahn cancelled trains 972 and 978 towards Innsbruck and 971/975 towards Salzburg, while ÖBB set up bus replacement services between Salzburg, Wörgl and Innsbruck. Long-distance trains to Germany are being diverted via Passau, adding up to 40 minutes and skipping key hubs such as Rosenheim and Munich-Ost.

The disruption particularly affects cross-border commuters and business travellers who rely on the Deutsche-Eck shortcut instead of the longer intra-Austria routes. Corporate travel managers with Vienna-originating passengers to Munich Airport should re-route via direct Vienna–Munich Railjet services or consider Austria Airlines codeshares to avoid missed flights.

ÖBB advised passengers to check the Scotty app before departure and warned that further unplanned night-time closures could occur if ballast renewal falls behind schedule. Rail-freight operators have also been instructed to shift some cargo to the Tauern route, potentially crowding passenger paths later in the month.

With winter-timetable changes due on 15 December, mobility planners will want to watch whether DB InfraGO completes works on time; delays could spill into the peak Christmas travel window, complicating expatriate home-leave trips.
