Meeting late on 23 October and announced in the early hours of 24 October 2025, the cabinet approved delimitation of the two countries’ maritime boundary, a step hailed by Nicosia as “a very positive development for security and mobility in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

The ratification could also bolster Cyprus’ push to join the Schengen area: Brussels has repeatedly stressed the importance of stable external borders for applicant states. By locking in its eastern maritime boundary, Cyprus strengthens its case that it can police future Schengen frontiers.
Businesses with offshore personnel or ship crews should monitor the November follow-up talks; new bilateral visa-waiver or facilitated-entry rules for seafarers are reportedly on the table and could be in force before the 2026 summer season.
