Finns scaled back overseas holidays in summer 2025; domestic overnight trips down one-fifth
A new Finnish Travel Survey release from Statistics Finland reveals that residents made roughly 2.5 million leisure trips abroad with overnight stays between May and August 2025, a slight decrease on last year. Overall outbound leisure travel—including same-day visits and cruises—totalled 2.8 million journeys. Nordic neighbours and Estonia remained the top choices, capturing half of all trips, while Southern Europe lost ground amid higher airfares and weather-related disruption.

Domestic tourism softened more sharply: overnight leisure trips inside Finland fell 20 % to 8.9 million, with paid-accommodation stays down nearly 10 % and visits to relatives or second homes plunging further. Analysts attribute the drop to tighter household budgets, poor summer weather and a surge in outbound pent-up demand earlier in the year.

For mobility and assignment planners, the data imply increased summer availability of hotels and serviced apartments in Finland’s secondary cities, potentially lowering relocation costs. Conversely, the decline in outbound travel could mean fewer flight options on certain leisure-oriented routes, affecting accompanying family travel plans.

Statistics Finland updates the travel survey three times a year; the next release will cover the autumn shoulder season, offering another barometer of Finnish consumer confidence and travel propensity. Corporations should track these trends when negotiating volume deals with carriers and accommodation providers.
