Belize Visa Policy
Foreign nationals coming to Belize must obtain visas unless they are from visa exempt countries. This visa exempt list is a selection of countries on Belize’s visa waiver list. If your country is in this list you don’t have to apply for a visa if you are coming for a short visit. As it stands, there are over 100 countries in the list but the number changes constantly in line with the bilateral and multilateral agreements.
Persons who hold diplomatic official passports from Haiti, India or Cuba do not need visas to enter Belize. Then there are countries whose citizens may enter Belize but they need a visa and a clearance certificate. Consult the list to know whether you need this certificate after applying for a visa.
Non Visa Exempt Visitors
If you are not from a visa exempt country you must apply for a visa and get one before you can enter Belize. This involves submitting an application form to a foreign mission abroad which will process our application and issue you the visa after a few weeks.
Proof of Funds
All visitors coming to Belize for whatever purpose must have sufficient funds at hand to cover their expenses. This rule applies to visa exempt and non visa exempt visitors. The current financial requirement is $75 per day but this amount is subject to change. The daily amount is multiplied by the total number of days they will spend in Belize and it can be held in cash or any cashless format.
Beside the daily expenses citizens of China, India and a few other countries are required to pay a repatriation fee of $600 once they land in Belize. This fee is not optional but mandatory for the nationals designated.
Belize Visa Alternatives
The government has created a separate entry document for people who are permanent residents of the US and Canada. Once they show their PR documents issued by these countries at the entry point they can enter visa free. This same privilege is accorded to persons with a valid Schengen visa who can stay for up to 90 days.
Key Information About Belize Visa And Other Travel Information
Take our time to read our updated travel information for Belize so you are better prepared for our upcoming trip.
You May Need To Use A Licensed Visa Agent: Belize only has few foreign missions abroad and the embassies of other countries that they partner with are not too much. If there is no consulate in your country or region you may need to use the services of a licensed visa agent to submit your application. Find out which agent handles visa applications on behalf of the Belizean government ahead of time.
Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date otherwise your application will be rejected. If you are going to apply for a long stay visa like an employment or study visa do well to get a new passport first.
English Speaking: Belize may be surrounded by Spanish speaking countries, their first language is English due to British colonization so you don’t have to waste time and resources learning Spanish for fear of inability to communicate. English is spoken by much of the population.
Plan For Bugs: Keep treated nets and mosquito and bug repellants in your back as you prepare for your trip. Belize is a fertile region for insect invasion because of the tropic region. Always use the nets and repellents to keep the insects out and wear protective clothing that covers your arms and legs especially when visiting remote areas.
Drugs Are Prohibited: It is illegal to do drugs in Belize and the penalty for those caught with it is severe. Offenders either pay high fines or are jailed depending on the severity of their offense. There are undercover police officers all over the country keeping tabs on buyers and dealers so you don’t want to be caught in the middle of any unsavory situation. Avoid drugs or areas where they are sold if you don’t want your holiday ruined.
Use Credit/Debit Card: You don’t want to put yourself at risk holding too much cash so it is best to travel with only cash you need for immediate payments and keep the rest in your far. You can pay for insurance, art collection and other items with it. You can also pay for services at restaurants or any other public place.
Safety: If you are coming as a tourist you should be very careful when outdoors. Travel in groups if you must and avoid late night adventures so you don’t put yourself at risk. Never be the last person to leave a club, restaurant or public place and avoid wearing expensive jewelry as this attracts criminals.
Approved Routes: If you must travel by land please use only approved routes. The borders between Mexico and Guatemala are known to be highly unsafe due to marauding armed gangs and drug cartels. The last thing you want is to be caught in the middle of a criminal enterprise or turf war between rival gangs. To avoid such an unpleasant experience, travel along the approved border crossings which are manned by law enforcement agents most of the time. Also travel during the day as night trips are highly unsafe.
