Strong winds force diversion of two IndiGo flights from Nagpur

Strong winds force diversion of two IndiGo flights from Nagpur
Severe tail-winds and heavy rain over central India on the night of 2 November disrupted air traffic at Nagpur’s Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar International Airport. IndiGo flight 6E-7543 from Hyderabad and flight 6E-486 from Bengaluru both aborted landing and diverted to Raipur and Bhopal respectively after pilots reported unstable approach parameters.

Airport sources told the Times of India that visibility remained acceptable but sudden gusts made touchdown unsafe. Passengers were bussed to Nagpur the following morning, causing missed onward connections for several business travellers headed to automotive plants in the Vidarbha region.

IndiGo said safety was never compromised and offered free date changes, yet the incident highlights a seasonal spike in weather-related diversions across India’s interior. Mobility managers planning factory visits in Q4 should consider buffer days and flexible tickets. Companies with time-critical cargo may also want to route through Pune or Hyderabad, which have longer runways and more all-weather capacity.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to review diversion-fuel policies for airports prone to wind shear, indicating regulatory scrutiny could tighten. Expect carriers to pad schedules and potentially raise fares on evening sectors where weather volatility is highest.
