Passenger traffic in Brazil’s North up 10 % as Belém prepares for COP-30 influx
Regional aviation portal BNC Amazonas reported on 25 October 2025 that airports across Brazil’s North handled 972,453 passengers in May 2025—a 10.8 % increase year-on-year and the highest May total since 2014. Belém’s Val-de-Cans airport alone processed 1.48 million travellers in the first nine months of 2025, a 2.4 % rise on 2024.

The uptick is widely credited to COP 30-related demand, route launches by airlines such as Avianca, and expanded domestic services from Azul and GOL. For corporates with Amazon operations, the figures confirm that seat capacity is tightening in the run-up to the summit. Hotel availability is also under strain, with average daily room rates in Belém up 38 % since January.

ANAC officials told local media that contingency slots will be opened at secondary northern airports, including Santarém and Macapá, and that temporary cabotage permissions are being reviewed for foreign charter carriers. Travel managers should therefore monitor fare-caps and consider flexible routings.

The growth spurt offers longer-term benefits: higher traffic volumes strengthen the business case for infrastructure upgrades signed off earlier this year, including a 300-metre runway extension and a new remote immigration hall. These improvements are expected to reduce aircraft taxi times by 15 % and double peak-hour passport capacity by late 2026.
