Avian-flu outbreak triggers poultry-movement curbs in northern Belgium

Avian-flu outbreak triggers poultry-movement curbs in northern Belgium
The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) confirmed on 25 October a highly pathogenic H5 bird-flu outbreak at a farm in Weelde, Antwerp province, near the Dutch border. Authorities have imposed a three-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone, mandating sheltering of all poultry and captive birds.

Although primarily an animal-health issue, the restrictions have immediate cross-border mobility implications. Transport of live birds, hatching eggs and untreated manure from the surveillance zone is now prohibited, and vehicles involved in poultry logistics must undergo disinfection when entering or leaving the area. The measures align with EU Council Directive 2005/94/EC but are applied by national decree.

Belgium is a significant node in northern Europe’s poultry supply chain, servicing exporters in the Netherlands and Germany. The new movement bans could therefore disrupt just-in-time deliveries and specialised freight services that share truck capacity with other perishable goods. Companies relocating agribusiness staff or operating expatriate assignments in the agri-food sector should monitor potential quarantine extensions that might delay site visits or plant audits.

Health authorities stress that the risk to humans remains low; nevertheless, business travellers visiting affected facilities must observe enhanced bio-security protocols, including disposable protective clothing and footwear disinfection.

The outbreak is Belgium’s third this autumn, suggesting that elevated vigilance will persist into the winter migration season for wild birds. Mobility managers should track any expansion of restriction zones, particularly around key road corridors linking Antwerp Port with the Dutch border.
