Coast Guard rescues 37 migrants off Lampedusa amid rough seas
In the early hours of 24 October 2025 an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat intercepted a seven-metre wooden craft drifting 12 nautical miles south-west of Lampedusa. Thirty-seven people—mostly West African nationals according to initial interviews—were taken on board and transferred to the island’s Contrada Imbriacola hotspot for medical screening and identification.

Although small compared with the peak summer landings, the operation reminds mobility managers that ad-hoc closures of the island’s pier and flight diversions can still occur well into the low season, potentially disrupting travel itineraries for offshore energy crews and humanitarian staff who use Lampedusa as a transit point.

The rescue also puts the spotlight back on Rome’s controversial deal to process certain sea-arrivals in centres located in Albania, a policy civil-society organisations at Festival Sabir branded “outsourcing of responsibility”. With the Entry/Exit System (EES) now live at Schengen external borders, carriers fear compounded delays if rescued migrants are transferred to Sicily’s commercial ports where cruise and freight traffic is heavy.

From a policy perspective, every autumn rescue feeds the statistics the Interior Ministry will use when deciding whether to renew the temporary suspension of Schengen at the Slovenian border—another variable business travellers must track.
