Free import
• Personal belongings that visitors bring for their own use are admitted temporarily without duty and taxes.
• Anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty or tax must be declared to customs on arrival.
Currency
• There is no limit on the amount of CFA francs (XAF) or foreign currency you may bring in.
• Cash of more than XAF 5,000,000 (or the equivalent in foreign currency, with CFA francs and foreign currency added together), as well as cheques and other negotiable instruments of that value, must be declared to customs when entering the CEMAC zone.
• Chadian Customs asks travellers to declare the foreign currency they carry on arrival, on the currency declaration form available at airports and land and river border posts. Non-residents should always do this, because on departure they may take out foreign currency only up to the amount declared on entry.
• Customs may ask where the money comes from and can confiscate funds whose origin is not justified. Failing to declare is fined 15% of the amount above the threshold, and the undeclared money is confiscated.
Prohibited
• Illegal drugs
Restricted
• Cats and dogs need a veterinary health certificate and a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
• Live wild animals, hunting trophies (such as ivory, horns and skins) and other wildlife products may only be moved, kept or sold with documents proving that they were legally obtained. Species listed under CITES also need CITES permits.
