Free import

• Goods for personal use with no commercial purpose, up to a total value of EUR 500 per traveler (EUR 250 for travelers under 18). The allowance is personal and cannot be combined with another traveler's. An item worth more than the allowance is taxed on its full value.
• For travelers over 17: 400 cigarettes or 150 cigarillos (up to 3 g each) or 75 cigars or 400 g of smoking tobacco.
• For travelers over 17: 4 L of table wine, plus either 1.5 L of spirits over 22% alcohol or 3 L of alcoholic drinks of 22% or less (such as sparkling or fortified wine).
• Keep your receipts and show them to customs. Without them, customs officers will estimate the value of your goods.
• Goods over the allowance are taxed on arrival: customs duty (goods from outside the EU), the special tax (taxe spéciale) and dock dues (octroi de mer). Goods from the EU carried for personal use are exempt from customs duty but not from the special tax and dock dues. Pay on the spot by bank card or cheque.
• Goods bought tax-free in the EU (tax refund form, from EUR 100 per form) must be shown to customs on arrival and are subject to the special tax and dock dues. If no customs officer is present when your flight arrives, contact the customs brigade within 2 days on +508 55 47 30 or +508 55 30 23.
• Goods carried for commercial purposes or for other people do not qualify for the allowance.

Currency

• The local currency is the euro (EUR).
• Cash, cheques (including traveler's cheques), securities and gold or silver coins worth EUR 10,000 or more in total (or the equivalent in other currencies) must be declared to customs when you arrive from or leave for another country, such as Canada. The declaration is not required for travel between Saint Pierre and Miquelon and mainland France or other French overseas territories.
• Failure to declare is punishable by a fine of 50% of the undeclared amount, and the cash can be held by customs.

Prohibited

• Illegal drugs
• Counterfeit goods, which customs seizes
• Foreign goods bearing a mark, name or sign suggesting they were made in or come from France or Saint Pierre and Miquelon
• Child pornography

Restricted

• Weapons, ammunition and military equipment need prior authorization.
• Medicines: bring only what you need for your stay, in the original packaging, with a copy of your prescription.
• Animal products, plant products and live animals are subject to special rules. Contact the Food Unit (Service Alimentation) of the DTAM (Direction des territoires, de l'alimentation et de la mer) before travel: +508 41 09 67, [email protected].
• Dogs, cats and ferrets must be identified by a microchip (or a tattoo applied before 1 July 2011) and travel with an EU pet passport or another official identification document. They must be vaccinated against rabies at the age of at least 12 weeks, at least 21 days before arrival for a first vaccination, and the vaccination must be valid, so the minimum age for import is 15 weeks.
• Pets also need a health certificate issued within 10 days before arrival, except pets returning to Saint Pierre and Miquelon after less than 2 months in Canada or the EU. Airlines and ferry operators may ask for a health certificate anyway or refuse some species or breeds - check with your carrier.
