Free import

• Personal effects for your own use are duty-free: clothing, personal items, books, jewellery, cameras, portable audio players, mobile phones, laptops with their accessories, baby strollers, wheelchairs and individual sports equipment.
• Other goods, such as gifts, are duty-free up to USD 1,000 (or the equivalent in guaraníes) if you arrive by air or river, and up to USD 300 if you arrive at a land border crossing, as long as their quantity, nature or variety does not suggest a commercial purpose.
• Goods bought at a duty-free shop on arrival in Paraguay have an additional allowance of USD 500.
• Goods above these allowances, or that look commercial, must be declared on a baggage declaration (Declaración Jurada de Equipaje) in the red channel. If customs retains them, you have up to 90 days to clear them through a customs broker.

Currency

• There is no maximum amount of cash you may bring into Paraguay.
• Cash and other monetary instruments (such as traveller's cheques, bonds or shares) of USD 10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, must be declared in the electronic traveller declaration (e-DAV) on the DNIT website before arrival or at the terminals at the point of entry. Show the declaration's QR code to customs and use the red channel.
• Not declaring can lead to administrative and even criminal penalties.

Prohibited

• Illegal drugs. Penalties for possession and trafficking are severe.

Restricted

• Firearms, ammunition and controlled accessories need a temporary entry authorisation from the Dirección General de Material Bélico (DIGEMABEL) before you travel. Show the approved form to customs when you enter and leave Paraguay. Explosives and pyrotechnic materials are also controlled by DIGEMABEL.
• Endangered animals and plants and products made from them, as listed by CITES, need CITES permits. Contact the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) before travel.
• Plants, seeds, fruit, vegetables and other plant products may need authorisation from SENAVE, the national plant health service. Goods that need a permit from another authority must be declared in the red channel.
• Dogs and cats (up to 5 animals; 6 or more are treated as a commercial shipment) need an original International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) issued by the official veterinary authority of the country of departure, valid for 60 days while the rabies vaccination is valid. Present it to the SENACSA veterinary inspector on arrival.
• Pets aged 90 days or older must be vaccinated against rabies; after a first vaccination, they may travel only after 21 days. Within 15 days before the CVI is issued they must be treated against internal and external parasites, and within 10 days before it they must pass a clinical examination by a veterinarian. Animals diagnosed with leishmaniasis may be refused entry.
