Free import
• For foreign travelers: 1 bottle of alcohol of up to 1 liter, or up to 12 cans of beer.
• For foreign travelers: up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars and 250 g of tobacco.
• Medicines worth up to NPR 10,000 (medicines banned in Nepal are not allowed).
• Food worth up to NPR 5,000 (including tinned food) and fresh fruit worth up to NPR 2,000.
• Used personal belongings: clothes, bedding and household items, plus 1 each of binoculars, laptop or tablet, camera, video camera, portable music system, bicycle, watch, mobile phone and power bank, and 1 pram and 1 tricycle.
• Equipment you use for your work or hobby: 1 set of tools of your trade, a doctor's basic instruments and medicines, a musician's instruments, a sportsperson's sports gear and a fishing rod.
• Gold ornaments up to 25 g for men or 50 g for women, and silver ornaments up to 100 g.
• Personal belongings may also be sent separately before or after your trip.
Currency
• You may bring in foreign currency and travelers cheques worth up to USD 5,000 without declaring them. Larger amounts must be declared to customs on arrival, by air or by land, and the declaration certified.
• Nepali and Indian citizens may bring in, take out and exchange Indian 200 and 500 rupee notes (series issued from 9 November 2016) up to INR 25,000 per person.
Prohibited
• Illegal drugs, including cannabis. Products containing CBD, such as some skincare products and e-cigarette refills, are illegal and may be seized.
• Medicines banned under Nepali law
• Old Indian 500 and 1,000 rupee notes (issued before 9 November 2016)
Restricted
• Goods above the allowances must be declared. Customs may let them in duty-free or charge duty. Goods for commercial use and goods whose import is banned or controlled under Nepali law are not covered by the allowances.
• Gold and silver ornaments above the allowance may be brought in only if declared to customs on arrival for taking back out. You pay a deposit of 20% of their value, refunded when customs checks the ornaments on departure.
• Drones: foreign nationals need a Temporary Drone Registration from the Flight Safety Standards Department of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (Sinamangal, Kathmandu). Apply in person and bring the drone for inspection. The drone must carry a CE marking.
• Wild animals and their parts may not be traded without a licence. Nepal is a CITES member.
• People who cross Nepal's land border back and forth get none of these allowances. Customs may waive duty only on personal items worth up to NPR 500.
• Goods that are not declared or are hidden from customs will be confiscated, and the traveler may be prosecuted.
