Free import

• From another EU country: goods bought with tax paid for your own use can be brought in without customs formalities. Customs may treat tobacco and alcohol as commercial above these per-person guide levels: 800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos (max. 3 g each), 200 cigars, 1 kg of smoking tobacco, 10 L of spirits, 20 L of intermediate products (such as port or sherry), 90 L of wine (of which no more than 60 L of sparkling wine) and 110 L of beer.
• From a non-EU country, for travelers aged 17 or older: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos (max. 3 g each) or 50 cigars or 250 g of smoking tobacco (or a proportional mix).
• From a non-EU country, for travelers aged 17 or older: 1 L of drinks over 22% alcohol (or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% or more) or 2 L of drinks up to 22% alcohol (or a proportional mix), plus 4 L of still wine and 16 L of beer.
• From a non-EU country: up to 20 ml of e-cigarette liquid (including refill containers) and up to 200 sticks of smokeless tobacco products.
• From a non-EU country: other goods for personal or family use or as gifts, brought occasionally in personal luggage, up to a total value of EUR 430 per traveler. The value of a single item cannot be split. Personal luggage brought back from a trip and medicines for your personal needs do not count toward this limit.
• Fuel in the standard tank of a vehicle plus up to 10 L in a portable container.

Currency

• Malta's currency is the euro (EUR).
• Anyone entering, leaving or transiting through Malta with cash of EUR 10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare it to customs on the official cash declaration form. This applies to travel from non-EU countries and also to travel from other EU countries. Cash includes banknotes and coins, bearer-negotiable instruments such as traveler's cheques, gold coins (at least 90% gold) and gold bars or nuggets (at least 99.5% gold).
• Failing to declare, or making a false declaration, is an offense. For undeclared amounts up to EUR 30,000, customs may settle the case with a penalty of 15% of the amount above EUR 10,000 (at least EUR 25); otherwise a court can order the confiscation of 20% to 50% of the amount above EUR 10,000 and impose a fine.

Prohibited

• Meat, milk and products made from them from non-EU countries (limited exceptions apply, see Restricted; food from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland follows EU rules)
• Illegal drugs, including cannabis. Malta's cannabis rules for residents do not apply to visitors, and penalties for smuggling drugs are severe, including for passengers in transit at the airport.

Restricted

• Food of animal origin allowed from non-EU countries: up to 2 kg of powdered infant milk, infant food or special food needed for medical reasons, and up to 2 kg of pet food needed for the health of an accompanying pet (branded, in unbroken packaging, not needing refrigeration before opening); up to 20 kg of gutted fresh or processed fish (or one fish, whichever weighs more); up to 2 kg of other products without meat or milk, such as honey. Undeclared meat or dairy products are confiscated and destroyed, and you may be fined or prosecuted.
• Plants and plant products from non-EU countries, including cut flowers, fruit and vegetables, need a phytosanitary (plant health) certificate.
• Endangered species of plants and animals and products made from them (CITES) may need a permit. For example, a permit is needed for more than 125 g of sturgeon caviar.
• Pets (dogs, cats, ferrets): up to 5 per traveler, microchipped and vaccinated against rabies (the first vaccination at 12 weeks of age or older and at least 21 days before travel). Malta does not admit young pets that are not yet vaccinated or fully immune. From an EU country they need an EU pet passport; from a non-EU country, an EU animal health certificate issued by an official vet no more than 10 days before arrival, a rabies antibody test from most countries, and entry through a designated travelers' point of entry. Dogs must be treated against the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis 24 to 120 hours before arriving in Malta, unless they travel directly from Finland, Ireland, Norway or Northern Ireland.
