Currency
• Luxembourg's currency is the euro (EUR).
• Anyone entering or leaving Luxembourg with cash of EUR 10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare it to customs. This applies to travel from and to non-EU countries and also to travel within the EU. Cash includes banknotes, coins, bearer instruments such as traveler's cheques, cheques and money orders, gold coins (at least 90% gold) and gold bars or nuggets (at least 99.5% gold). Jewelry and precious stones are not included.
• The declaration must be made before crossing the border, online through MyGuichet.lu or on the official form sent to
[email protected] or handed in at a customs office (at Luxembourg Airport, at the customs desk on arrival). Failure to declare can be fined EUR 251 to EUR 25,000 and part of the cash can be confiscated.
Prohibited
• Meat, milk and products made from them from non-EU countries (limited exceptions apply, for example for powdered infant milk, infant food and special medical food; food from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland follows EU rules)
• Illegal drugs, including cannabis
Restricted
• Other food of animal origin from non-EU countries: up to 2 kg of powdered infant milk, infant food, special medical food or special pet food (branded, unopened, not needing refrigeration), up to 20 kg of fishery products (or one fish, whichever weighs more), and up to 2 kg of eggs and honey. Undeclared meat or dairy products are confiscated and destroyed, and you may be fined.
• Plants and plant products from non-EU countries need a phytosanitary (plant health) certificate.
• Endangered species of plants and animals and products made from them (CITES), such as ivory, coral, reptile skins and tortoiseshell, need CITES permits.
• Weapons and ammunition, medicines beyond personal needs, cultural goods (works of art, collectors' items and antiques) and petroleum products beyond the vehicle tank and a 10 L spare can are subject to specific formalities and may be prohibited in some cases.
• Cultural goods brought from outside the EU fall under EU Regulation 2019/880 and may have to be declared and checked through the EU ICG system.
• Customs can hold goods suspected of being counterfeit.
• Pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) from a non-EU country need a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at 12 weeks of age or older and at least 21 days before travel, and an EU animal health certificate issued by an official vet no more than 10 days before arrival. From most non-EU countries a rabies antibody (titer) test is also required, taken at least 30 days after vaccination and 3 months before travel. No more than 5 pets per traveler.
• At Luxembourg Airport, use the green channel only if you have nothing to declare; goods above the allowances, restricted goods and goods for commercial use must be declared in the red channel. Misuse of the green channel leads to payment of duties and taxes plus penalties.
