Free import
• Personal belongings that visitors bring for their own use are admitted temporarily without duty.
• No official duty-free limits for tobacco, alcohol or perfume are currently published. Carry only small quantities for personal use and declare anything more.
Currency
• There is no limit on the amount of CFA francs (XAF) or foreign currency you may bring in.
• Cash of more than XAF 5,000,000 (or the equivalent in foreign currency, with CFA francs and foreign currency added together), as well as cheques and other negotiable instruments of that value, must be declared to customs when entering the CEMAC zone.
• Customs may ask where the money comes from and can confiscate funds whose origin is not justified. Failing to declare is fined 15% of the amount above the threshold, and the undeclared money is confiscated.
• Non-residents should declare foreign currency on arrival, because on departure they may take out foreign currency only up to the amount declared on entry.
Prohibited
• Illegal drugs
• Skins, trophies and other parts of fully protected wild animals
Restricted
• Firearms and ammunition must be declared on arrival and need prior authorization. Foreign visitors who come to hunt need a temporary import permit for their hunting weapon.
• Any live animal needs prior authorization from the ministry in charge of wildlife. Cats and dogs need a veterinary health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination.
• Skins, trophies and other parts of partially protected wild animals need a certificate of origin and, where required, an export permit from the country they come from.
• You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty or tax.
