• There are strict rules on goods brought into Yemen. You must declare to customs anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty or tax.
• Yemen does not publish current duty-free allowances for tobacco, alcohol, perfume or gifts. Check with the Yemeni embassy before you travel if you plan to bring more than personal items.
Currency
• Import of Yemeni rials (YER) is illegal.
• There is no limit on the amount of foreign currency you can bring in, but amounts over USD 3,000 must be declared on arrival. Keep the declaration, as you cannot take out more foreign currency than you brought in.
• Customs can seize cash, bearer instruments, precious metals or gems that are not declared or are declared falsely.
• The economy is mainly cash-based and there are few ATMs outside the main cities. US dollars in cash are the easiest currency to exchange.
