• From another EU country: goods for personal use on which excise duty was paid in that country are not taxed again in Slovenia. Amounts that do not indicate trade are: 800 cigarettes (or 100 ml of e-cigarette liquid, or 800 heated tobacco sticks), 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars, 1 kg of smoking tobacco, 10 L of spirits, 20 L of intermediate products (such as fortified wine), 90 L of wine (of which up to 60 L of sparkling wine) and 110 L of beer.
• From a non-EU country: goods for personal use or gifts up to EUR 430 per traveler arriving by air or sea, and EUR 300 per traveler arriving by other means (including private pleasure flights and boats). Travelers under 15 get EUR 150. The value of one item cannot be split between travelers. Medicines for personal needs and personal belongings brought for the trip are not counted in this value.
• From a non-EU country, tobacco for travelers aged 17 or older: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 g of smoking tobacco, or a proportional mix of these.
• From a non-EU country, alcohol for travelers aged 17 or older: 4 L of still wine, 16 L of beer, plus 1 L of spirits over 22% alcohol or 2 L of alcoholic drinks up to 22% (such as liqueurs or sparkling wine). The last two can be combined in proportion.
• Motor fuel in the standard tank of a vehicle, plus up to 10 L in a portable can, is duty-free.
Currency
• Travelers entering or leaving the EU with EUR 10,000 or more in cash must declare it in writing to customs at the point of entry or exit. Cash includes banknotes and coins in any currency, bearer cheques, traveler's cheques and money orders without a named payee, and gold coins and bars.
• When crossing Slovenia's borders with other EU countries, cash of EUR 10,000 or more must be declared only if customs or the police ask for it.
Prohibited
• Meat, milk and products made from them from non-EU countries (small amounts are allowed from the Faroe Islands and Greenland; the rules do not apply to travel from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland)
• Illegal drugs, except medicines carried under the rules below
• Weapons that may not be bought or owned in Slovenia
Restricted
• Food from non-EU countries: up to 2 kg of powdered infant milk, infant food, special medical food or special pet food (branded packaging, not needing refrigeration), up to 20 kg of fish or fish products (or one fish, whichever weighs more), and up to 2 kg of other products without meat or milk, such as honey. From the Faroe Islands and Greenland up to 10 kg each of meat, dairy products, eggs and honey.
• Plants and plant products from non-EU countries, including fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, need a phytosanitary (plant health) certificate.
• Medicines: only for your own use, your family's use or your pet, in amounts that match the treatment. Customs may ask for the prescription. Medicines containing narcotic substances need a medical certificate issued or endorsed by the authorities of your country of residence.
• Firearms and ammunition: only weapons that may be owned in Slovenia can cross the border, with a valid weapons document. Import, export and transit need a permit from the Ministry of the Interior. EU residents need a European Firearms Pass; visitors coming for hunting or shooting competitions need a permit from a Slovenian embassy or consulate, or from the police at the border after declaring the weapons. Air weapons and crossbows need no special permit.
• Endangered species of plants and animals and products made from them (CITES), such as ivory, coral, and crocodile or snake skin items, need CITES permits and must be declared. Small amounts for personal use are allowed without a permit, for example up to 125 g of caviar.
• Cultural goods, such as archaeological objects, antiques and old works of art, may need a permit from the Ministry of Culture to be brought into Slovenia.
• Pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination (given at 12 weeks of age or older and at least 21 days before travel) and an animal health certificate, or an EU pet passport. From countries not on the EU list, a rabies antibody (titer) test is also required. No more than 5 pets per trip. Pets from outside the EU, except from Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican, must enter Slovenia through Ljubljana Airport (Brnik), where the pet and its documents are checked.
• Goods above the duty-free allowances, or subject to a ban or restriction, must be declared to customs (red channel). If you are not sure, declare the goods.
