• From another EU country: goods for personal use on which tax was paid in that country are not taxed again. Amounts above the EU guide levels (800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars, 1 kg of tobacco, 10 L of spirits, 20 L of fortified wine, 90 L of wine (of which up to 60 L sparkling) and 110 L of beer) may be treated as commercial.
• From a non-EU country: goods for personal use or gifts up to EUR 430 per traveler arriving by air and EUR 300 per traveler arriving by other means (road, rail or river). Travelers under 15 may bring goods up to EUR 150, whatever the means of transport. The value of a single item cannot be split.
• From a non-EU country, tobacco for travelers aged 17 or older arriving by air: 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 g of smoking tobacco, plus 10 retail packs of smokeless tobacco.
• From a non-EU country, tobacco for travelers aged 17 or older arriving by any other means, including by land from Ukraine: 40 cigarettes or 20 cigarillos or 10 cigars or 50 g of smoking tobacco, plus 2 retail packs of smokeless tobacco. The tobacco amounts can be combined in proportion.
• From a non-EU country, alcohol for travelers aged 17 or older: 4 L of still wine, 16 L of beer, plus 1 L of spirits over 22% alcohol or 2 L of alcoholic drinks up to 22% (such as sparkling wine or fortified wine). The last two can be combined in proportion.
• Motor fuel in the standard tank of a vehicle, plus up to 10 L in a portable can, is duty-free.
Currency
• Travelers entering or leaving the EU with EUR 10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare it in writing to customs.
Prohibited
• Meat, milk and products made from them from non-EU countries (small amounts are allowed from the Faroe Islands and Greenland; the rules do not apply to travel from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland). Products that do not meet the rules must be handed over for destruction, and failing to declare them can lead to a fine or prosecution.
• Items of cultural value taken out of another country without the consent of that country
Restricted
• Food from non-EU countries: up to 2 kg of powdered infant milk, infant food, special medical food or special pet food (branded, sealed packaging, not needing refrigeration), up to 20 kg of fish or fish products (or one fish, whichever weighs more; fresh fish must be gutted), and up to 2 kg of honey, live oysters, mussels and snails. From the Faroe Islands and Greenland up to 10 kg each of meat, dairy products and these other foods. Bread, chocolate, sweets and pasta not containing meat are exempt.
• Plants and plant products from non-EU countries, including fresh fruit and vegetables, need a phytosanitary certificate. Only bananas, coconuts, durians, pineapples and dates are exempt.
• Endangered species of plants and animals and products made from them (CITES) are subject to extra limits; for example, no more than 125 g of sturgeon caviar per person.
• Pets (dogs, cats, ferrets), no more than 5 per trip: microchip, valid rabies vaccination (given at 12 weeks of age or older and at least 21 days before travel), a veterinary health certificate issued by an official veterinarian (valid 10 days) with a written declaration that the trip is non-commercial, or an EU pet passport. From non-EU countries not on the EU list, a rabies antibody (titer) test is also required, taken at least 30 days after vaccination and 3 months before travel. Slovakia does not allow young pets without a valid rabies vaccination to enter from non-EU countries.
• Pets arriving from non-EU countries must enter through a designated point: the road crossings Vyšné Nemecké, Ubľa and Veľké Slemence, the rail crossing Čierna nad Tisou, or the airports of Bratislava, Košice, Poprad, Žilina, Piešťany, Sliač, Prievidza, Nitra and Jasná.
• Firearms and ammunition: visitors may bring firearms temporarily only for hunting, sports shooting events or historical re-enactments, with a firearms accompanying letter (zbrojný sprievodný list) issued by the Slovak Police or a Slovak embassy on the basis of an invitation. Residents of other EU countries may use a European Firearms Pass with the weapon entered in it, and must show the invitation. Travelers from outside the EU must show the permit of each EU country they will enter or cross at the EU border.
• Tobacco products and spirits above the duty-free allowances are taxed, and can only be released if they carry Slovak excise stamps.
• Goods above the duty-free allowances, or subject to a ban or restriction, must be declared to customs (red channel). Using the green channel means you declare that you have nothing to declare.
