• Tools and equipment brought by a foreigner for an investment, company or government project, if you undertake to take them back out when you leave.
• Goods above these allowances are charged customs duty and commercial tax. Passengers with goods to declare must fill in the Passenger Declaration Form and use the Red Channel; others use the Green Channel.
Currency
• Foreign currency (cash, traveller's cheques and other monetary instruments) over USD 10,000 or equivalent must be declared on the Passenger Declaration Form on arrival. Failure to declare can lead to imprisonment.
Prohibited
• Narcotics and illegal drugs; penalties are very severe and include long prison sentences or the death penalty for trafficking.
• Gold and gold bullion for trading.
• Endangered species of animals and plants and products made from them (CITES), such as items made from turtle shell, without permits.
Restricted
• Foreign visitors must declare on the Passenger Declaration Form any jewellery, gold and gems, valuable personal items, tools and equipment and foreign currency that they plan to take back out of Myanmar.
• Medicines, food and food supplements (other than personal medicines above) need approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
• Drones with cameras need approval from the Directorate of Communications and the Department of Civil Aviation before you travel. Using a drone without permits can lead to criminal penalties.
• Toy guns need confirmation from the Myanmar Police Force that they are toys and pose no security risk.
• Live animals need an animal quarantine certificate; plants and seeds need a plant quarantine certificate.
• Goods that need a permit and arrive without one can be seized. Goods that may not be imported can be held by customs at the airport and returned to you when you leave Myanmar.
