• Personal belongings for your own use. Declare all goods and gifts to customs; goods of a commercial nature must be declared and cleared under the procedures for commercial shipments.
• The baggage and gifts of children under 18 may be added to the allowance of the accompanying parent or legal guardian.
• You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty or tax. Baggage may be searched at any stage of the journey.
Currency
• On arrival, declare to customs the cash, negotiable instruments, precious metals and precious stones you carry, especially if their value is above the permitted limit.
• Taking Mauritanian ouguiyas (MRU) out of the country is prohibited, so only change the money you need. US dollars and euros can be exchanged at banks, some hotels and official exchange offices.

• Pork and pork products
• Narcotics and psychotropic substances of any kind
• Weapons, explosives and ammunition without official authorization
• Counterfeit goods and goods that infringe intellectual property rights
• Items contrary to public morals or religious beliefs
• Endangered species of animals and plants and products made from them
• Baggage is scanned on arrival at Nouakchott International Airport and vehicles may be searched at land borders. Alcohol and pork products are confiscated, and people carrying them can be arrested or fined.
Restricted
• Firearms, including sporting guns, need an official authorization, to be obtained before you travel.
• Medicines, especially for chronic conditions and controlled substances, must be for personal use, in their original packaging and accompanied by a recent, detailed prescription from your doctor.
• Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products may be banned in exceptional circumstances to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
• Some electronic and wireless communication devices may need an authorization from the telecommunications regulator.
• Pets need special health certificates and an import permit.
