Indian e-Passport Rollout Clarified: No Extra Biometrics, No Fee Hike for UAE Residents
Responding to swirling social-media rumours, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai held a press briefing on 30 October to clarify that the upcoming chip-enabled e-passport will neither require additional biometric collection nor attract higher fees. Application channels through BLS and VFS centres remain unchanged.

The e-passport embeds an ICAO-compliant microchip that stores personal and biometric data, promising faster e-gate processing and stronger fraud protection. For the 3.5 million-strong Indian community in the UAE, the reassurance averts a feared scramble for new appointments and biometrics.

From a mobility perspective, the confirmation means assignees can renew or apply for passports without disrupting travel schedules—a relief for UAE-based Indians who make frequent business trips to Europe and Africa. Travel managers should, however, note that some foreign airports may still channel chip passports through separate lanes, so employee travel profiles should be updated accordingly.

Passport agents have been instructed to use the existing Passport Seva 2.0 portal, and early feedback from trial issuances indicates that processing times have dropped by 15 percent thanks to automated data capture.

Long term, India plans to integrate the e-passport with its DigiLocker platform, allowing holders to consent to one-click KYC sharing—a potential game-changer for remote onboarding of Indian employees overseas.
