Storm warnings for Bavarian Alps, Black Forest may disrupt holiday mobility

Storm warnings for Bavarian Alps, Black Forest may disrupt holiday mobility
Germany’s meteorological agency DWD issued level-2 wind alerts early this morning for elevations above 1,000 m in the Alps, Black Forest and Harz, forecasting gusts of up to 100 km/h. Popular half-term hiking routes such as the Partnach Gorge and Feldberg summit may close temporarily, and the Zugspitzbahn cog railway has announced speed restrictions until conditions ease.

While not a policy change, the warning has immediate mobility implications: tour operators are rerouting coaches and advising travellers to secure loose items on balconies and campsites. Employers should remind staff on incentive trips that standard German business-travel insurance often excludes “mountain sports above 1,000 m” unless specifically endorsed.

The DWD expects the front to clear by Saturday but notes that fallen branches could block feeder roads. Munich Airport says wind-shear procedures are in place; minor delays to short-haul departures are possible. Travellers should monitor alerts via the WarnWetter app and allow extra time for alpine transfers.
