Australia Adds UAE to Heightened-Caution List in Global Travel Advisory Update

Australia Adds UAE to Heightened-Caution List in Global Travel Advisory Update
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its Smartraveller advisories on 29 October, placing the United Arab Emirates—along with Brazil, China, Egypt and others—on a list of destinations where travellers should ‘exercise a high degree of caution’ due to environmental risks and potential social unrest.

While the wording matches existing guidance for the UAE, the fresh notice specifically cites extreme heat events, regional security volatility and the spike in drone incidents at major Gulf airports as emerging concerns for Australian visitors. The advisory recommends comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and cautions against visiting labour-camp areas on the city outskirts.

For UAE-based firms employing Australian staff, the change may affect corporate travel-approval thresholds and invalidation clauses in some insurance policies that reference government advice levels. Relocation managers should ensure employees register trips with Smartraveller so they receive real-time updates.

The advisory arrives just ahead of the UAE’s peak winter tourism season and a record inflow of Australian cruise passengers via Dubai. Industry stakeholders fear the wording may deter some leisure travellers, though business traffic is expected to remain resilient thanks to strong bilateral trade.

DFAT stresses that the advisory is precautionary and that most visits remain trouble-free. However, it urges travellers to monitor local media and heed any instructions from UAE authorities, particularly during regional flashpoints.
