Enhanced UK-Switzerland FTA Talks Emphasise Business-Traveller Access

Enhanced UK-Switzerland FTA Talks Emphasise Business-Traveller Access
A separate communiqué issued the same day by the UK government summarised the eighth round of negotiations for an Enhanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Switzerland, held in Bern and Geneva between 20 and 24 October 2025. The update stresses that services—and the mobility that supports them—will be ‘at the heart’ of any deal, with negotiators aiming to ‘cement business-travel arrangements’ and guarantee the free flow of data.

The envisioned FTA would lock in the liberal provisions of the temporary Services Mobility Agreement, but on a permanent treaty footing. Officials reported progress on competition and digital-trade chapters, signalling that mutual recognition of professional qualifications and streamlined visa-exemption lists are on the table for the next negotiating round, scheduled in the UK for early 2026.

For corporate mobility managers, the communiqué suggests that future business travel between the two high-value service economies could become even simpler—potentially including multi-entry rights that exceed the current 90-day ceiling. However, nothing is final, and firms should continue tracking negotiations closely; new rules could entail additional reporting duties or social-security coordination that affect cost planning.

The announcement also underlines Switzerland’s strategic goal of diversifying trade relationships post-Brexit while maintaining autonomy from EU regulatory orbit. A modern FTA that embeds mobility, data and competition rules could serve as a blueprint for other non-EU European states seeking deep services ties with the UK.
