Emirates celebrates 40 years since its maiden flight, signalling next growth phase
Emirates Airline marked the 40th anniversary of its very first commercial service—Dubai to Karachi on 25 October 1985—by flying a retro-fitted Boeing 777 with its new Premium Economy cabin back to Karachi for a showcase event attended by Pakistani officials, UAE diplomats and aviation executives.

The carrier revealed that it has transported more than 19 million passengers on the Dubai–Karachi route alone since 1985 and now serves 140 destinations worldwide. Executives used the anniversary to highlight forthcoming fleet investments and the planned migration of operations to Dubai’s Al-Maktoum International, where a 128-billion-dirham terminal project is under way.

For corporate travel managers, the Premium Economy product—already rolled out on selected Europe and Asia routes—offers a mid-tier alternative that may deliver cost savings against business-class fares while preserving traveller comfort on long-haul assignments. Emirates said the four-class 777 cabin will progressively appear on high-volume corporate routes in 2026.

Mobility strategists also view the anniversary as a barometer of Dubai’s broader connectivity ambitions. The airline’s expansion plans dovetail with government investments in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, aimed at doubling the city’s foreign-trade volume by 2033. Stronger air links to secondary South Asian cities are expected to facilitate faster project-deployment cycles for UAE-based multinationals.

Travel-procurement teams should monitor Emirates’ phased Premium Economy rollout, as fare-filing over the next six months will determine budgeting for 2026 mobility programmes. Early engagement with the airline’s corporate sales team could secure negotiated inventory on the new cabin during the introductory period.
