Free import
• For travelers aged 17 or older: 4.5 L of wine or beer, and 3 bottles (or other containers) of spirits or liqueur, each holding no more than 1.125 L.
• For travelers aged 17 or older: 50 cigarettes, or 50 g of cigars or other tobacco products, or 50 g of a mixture of them.
• Other goods bought overseas or duty-free (including gifts) up to a total value of NZD 700 per person. Above NZD 700 you pay GST and duty, and people traveling together cannot combine their allowances.
• Clothing, footwear, jewellery and toiletries for your own use do not need to be declared if they meet biosecurity requirements.
• Anything over these allowances must be declared, and duty and GST are charged on the excess. Undeclared excess tobacco is seized and destroyed.
Currency
• Cash of NZD 10,000 or more (or the foreign equivalent), including travelers cheques, bank drafts and money orders, must be declared on arrival.
Prohibited
• Illegal drugs
• Methamphetamine and cannabis utensils and their parts, such as bongs, hash pipes, vaporisers (unless approved as a medical device) and any pipe with a heatproof bowl. Tobacco pipes are allowed.
• Objectionable material dealing with sex, horror, crime, cruelty or violence in a way that could harm the public good, in any form (books, videos, games, photos, phones, USB drives, computer files). Indecent or obscene items such as some sex toys or dolls may also be seized.
• Radio devices that interfere with local networks, such as mobile phone or GPS jammers, some dog-tracking collars, unrestricted two-way radios, UHF CB radios from the USA, UK and Europe, and some radio microphones.
• Small high-powered magnets (such as "buckyballs").
• Dogs of the following breeds or type: Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, Perro de Presa Canario and American Pit Bull Terrier.
Restricted
• Every traveler, including babies and children, must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before reaching passport control. It is free on travellerdeclaration.govt.nz or in the NZTD app, and can be submitted from 24 hours before your trip starts. If you fail to declare restricted or prohibited items, or make a false declaration, you can get an NZD 400 instant fine or be prosecuted.
• Biosecurity: declare all food (even small amounts, cooked or packaged), plants and seeds, wooden items, animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, honey, feathers, shells), herbal and traditional medicines, and used outdoor, sports, camping, fishing and hiking equipment. Clean footwear of soil and seeds before arrival, and bring freshwater fishing gear clean and dry. Items may be inspected or treated at your cost; if unsure, declare or use the amnesty bins.
• Prescription medicines: bring a copy of the prescription or a doctor's letter, keep them in the original packaging and bring no more than 3 months' supply (6 months for oral contraceptives). Declare them if you carry more or if they are not prescribed to you or a family member.
• Controlled drugs, including all medicines containing pseudoephedrine, must be declared: original packaging, no more than 1 month's supply, and a prescription or doctor's letter. Keep pseudoephedrine medicines in your hand luggage.
• Firearms, weapons, ammunition and firearm parts need a permit from Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand or the New Zealand Police before you travel. This includes airguns, stun devices, pepper spray, automatic-opening, gravity and butterfly knives, swordsticks and knuckle-dusters.
• Endangered species (CITES) items need a permit from the Department of Conservation, e.g. coral, clams, crocodile or alligator products, American ginseng, medicines containing dendrobium or saussurea costus, ivory, animal skins and furs, and items made from marine life or protected plants. Contact

• Cats and dogs must meet the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) import health standard, revised in 2026. From 1 April 2027 all cats and dogs must meet the new rules, including an official identification check at least 6 months before export. Contact

• Handheld high-power laser pointers, gold, oil, gas and coal of Russian origin, and luxury goods made in Russia are restricted.
• Commercial goods, goods for sale or business use, and goods carried for another person must be declared.
