Free import
• Personal belongings that visitors bring for their own use are admitted temporarily without duty and taxes.
• Anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty or tax must be declared to customs on arrival.
Currency
• There is no limit on the amount of CFA francs (XAF) or foreign currency you may bring in.
• Cash of more than XAF 5,000,000 (or the equivalent in foreign currency, with CFA francs and foreign currency added together), as well as cheques and other negotiable instruments of that value, must be declared to customs when entering the CEMAC zone.
• Non-residents who may want to take foreign currency out again should declare it on arrival: on departure they may take out foreign currency only up to the amount declared on entry.
• Customs may ask where the money comes from and can confiscate funds whose origin is not justified. Failing to declare is fined 15% of the amount above the threshold, and the undeclared money is confiscated.
Prohibited
• Counterfeit and pirated goods
• Goods that threaten public order, public security, public health or public morality, such as illegal drugs
• Fully protected wild animals (such as elephants) and their trophies, including ivory, unless a special exemption has been granted by the wildlife administration for scientific research or breeding
Restricted
• Other wild animals and their trophies need an import authorization, issued on presentation of a veterinary health certificate and a certificate of origin. Species listed under CITES also need CITES permits.
