US Embassy warns of new Lithuania–Belarus border restrictions affecting Polish transit
In a security alert issued on 30 October, the US Embassy in Minsk advised travellers of fresh Lithuanian government measures that limit crossings at land checkpoints with Belarus. Although the controls apply on Lithuanian territory, they immediately affect overland routes frequently used by business travellers and logistics operators moving between Poland, the Baltic States and Belarus.

Under the new rules, only two crossings—Medininkai–Kamenny Log and Šalčininkai–Benjakoni—remain open for passenger vehicles, with freight traffic channelled exclusively through Lavoriškės–Kotlovka. Lithuanian authorities cited ‘heightened hybrid-threat activity’ originating in Belarus as the reason for the tighter regime. Queues of more than six hours were reported on 30 October, and haulage associations warn that transit times to or from Poland via Lithuania could double in the coming days.

Poland’s Road Transport Inspectorate (ITD) has relayed the advisory to domestic carriers, recommending route diversions via the Koroszczyn–Kukuryki / Brest crossing, which remains congested but operational. Mobility managers should note that passengers with multiple-entry Schengen visas may be subject to exit-interviews and vehicle inspections when re-entering Poland from Lithuania. The embassy urges US citizens—and by extension all foreign nationals—to carry additional proof of itinerary and accommodation.

The development adds to the patchwork of ad-hoc border measures across Central Europe. Since July, Poland itself has re-imposed temporary checks on the German and Lithuanian borders, underscoring a regional trend toward flexible internal Schengen controls driven by migration and security concerns.
