Visa denial forces relocation of FIFA women’s tournament from Dubai to Morocco

Visa denial forces relocation of FIFA women’s tournament from Dubai to Morocco
FIFA confirmed on 23 October 2025 that its four-nation ‘FIFA Unites: Women’s Series’—originally slated for 23–29 October in Dubai—has been moved to Rabat after the United Arab Emirates failed to issue entry visas for the Afghanistan women’s refugee squad (now competing as ‘Afghan Women United’). Tunisia will take the UAE’s place in the line-up alongside Chad and Libya.

Players, many of whom had fled Afghanistan after the Taliban banned women’s sports, had been advised by FIFA to proceed to departure airports, only to be told they could not board. The episode left several athletes retraumatised and prompted FIFA to arrange emergency safeguarding and psychological support.

While the case centres on sport, it highlights broader mobility considerations: last-minute visa denials can derail international events, disrupt corporate hospitality arrangements and strain a host country’s soft-power credentials. Event organisers must therefore build contingency immigration plans, including alternative venues and rapid-relocation insurance.

For UAE inbound planners, the incident serves as a cautionary tale: ensure early, written confirmation of visa guarantees for all participants—including refugees, dual nationals and stateless persons—before marketing an event. Failure to do so can trigger reputational damage, sunk costs and complicated re-routing of logistics.

The UAE Football Association has not commented, but analysts expect tighter coordination mechanisms between sports federations and immigration authorities to avoid repeats, especially with major tournaments such as the 2027 Asian Cup on the horizon.
