Mozambique insurgency keeps Austrian travel warning at Level 4

Mozambique insurgency keeps Austrian travel warning at Level 4
Austrian authorities on 22 October upheld their strictest regional travel warning for Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province and parts of Nampula after fresh clashes between government forces and Islamist insurgents near Palma. The security notice classifies the province as Level 4, instructing citizens to leave immediately if safe to do so. The rest of Mozambique remains at Level 3 (high risk).

The advisory highlights kidnap threats to foreign workers in the LNG corridor and points to last week’s ambush on an aid convoy on the Mueda–Mocímboa da Praia road. Austrian energy suppliers with contracts at the Afungi LNG site have activated remote-work protocols and rotated non-essential staff via Johannesburg rather than the closer Pemba airport, where flight schedules are erratic.

International SOS reports that medical evacuation insurance premiums for Cabo Delgado have doubled since July, while insurers now require satellite-phone capability as a condition for coverage. Businesses sending engineers under short-term assignment (Rotationsreise) should pre-register via the Auslandsservice app and prepare contingency airlift through Maputo.

The warning also reminds travellers that Schengen-area overstays caused by unexpected evacuations will not be automatically excused and must be documented for Austrian border police on re-entry under the new Entry/Exit System.

Companies with compliance obligations under Austria’s new Supply-Chain Due-Diligence Act must reassess security clauses in their Mozambique supplier contracts by year-end.
