Home Office to tighten Modern Slavery Act after claims used to block deportations
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood plans to amend the Modern Slavery Act so migrants must raise trafficking claims on arrival, not at the point of deportation. The change follows a surge in last-minute claims—19,000 in 2024—that have delayed removals. Proposed measures include a 14-day filing window, tighter definitions and limits on appeal rights, aiming to curb abuse while shortening wait times for genuine victims.
