The shutdown forced the cancellation of Eurostar service 9100 from Amsterdam to London, which normally calls at Brussels-South/Midi, and Eurocity direct services 9500 and 9200 operating between Brussels and Dutch cities. Several intercity and sprinter services were also truncated south of Rotterdam, leaving travellers bound for Antwerp and Brussels scrambling for replacement coaches or next-day departures.
Although the alarm proved to be a false positive, the incident highlighted the vulnerability of the single high-speed rail corridor that links Belgium with the Netherlands and onwards to the UK. Business-travel associations renewed calls for improved contingency planning, noting that Sunday evening services carry a high proportion of consultants and EU-officials returning to Brussels for the working week.
Eurostar stated that affected ticket-holders could exchange their journeys free of charge or claim refunds. NS said it would review station safety protocols but stressed that passenger safety must take precedence, even at the cost of significant disruption.
