UKVI Clarifies When Applicants Should Collect Passports as Processing-Time Guide Updated

UKVI Clarifies When Applicants Should Collect Passports as Processing-Time Guide Updated
UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) has updated its global processing-time guidance, adding new instructions that applicants who left their passport at a visa application centre should wait to be contacted before returning to collect it. The change, published on 22 October, aims to reduce unnecessary visits and congestion at overseas centres, many of which outsource biometric enrolment to private providers.

While standard processing targets remain unchanged—three weeks for most visit, study and work visas—UKVI emphasises that high demand, fraud checks or technical outages can still lengthen decisions. The guidance retains a three-week target for key business routes such as Skilled Worker, Global Talent and UK Expansion Worker.

For mobility teams the clarification matters in jurisdictions where passports are routinely retained; premature collection attempts can delay issuance of entry vignettes or cause passports to be lost in transit. Travel managers should update pre-departure briefings to reflect the new advice, especially for short-notice assignees who may be tempted to retrieve their passport early for other travel.

UKVI has also reminded applicants that refunds are only available if an application has not yet entered processing, reinforcing the importance of accurate timelines in assignment planning.
