Switzerland’s national tourism agency used the first significant November snowfall to launch a joint promotion with Finland, Austria and Croatia, positioning their frozen lakes as short-haul escapes for Europe’s growing remote-work population. The campaign, unveiled on 8 November, highlights Swiss destinations such as Lake St. Moritz and Lac de Joux, pairing ski-in/co-work-out packages with simplified business-visitor rules that allow most foreign nationals to work remotely for up to 90 days without a permit.

Officials say the move responds to research showing a 28 % rise in ‘laptop luggers’—professionals who extend leisure trips by adding remote workdays. Participating cantons will pilot digital-nomad passes offering discounted rail travel and priority co-working space, backed by Swiss Travel System and local chambers of commerce.

For employers the offer could ease accommodation costs on Swiss temporary assignments: companies can book serviced apartments at off-peak winter rates while employees enjoy alpine sports. Global mobility teams must, however, ensure compliance with Posted-Worker notification rules if staff perform client-facing tasks.

Travel insurers also remind policy-holders that recreational ice-skating on natural lakes is often classified as a “hazardous activity,” requiring supplemental cover. Mobility managers should update insurance matrices accordingly.
