Infrabel has begun an intensive nine-day upgrade programme on key rail corridors in Limburg Province, resulting in the suspension of all passenger services between Hasselt, Tongeren and Liège, and between Hasselt and Sint-Truiden, from 8 to 16 November.

The project replaces seven level crossings with two pedestrian tunnels, installs a new road underpass at Sint-Lambertuslaan and renews track infrastructure on the Hasselt-Tongeren line, including bridge-deck works over the Hasselt ring road. SNCB has introduced replacement buses calling at intermediate stations, but warns travellers to add at least 30–45 minutes to their journeys and to consult its real-time app before departure.

Weekday InterCity services linking the Belgian coast and Brussels with Genk are truncated, while weekend trains will skip Tienen, Landen and several smaller stops. The works coincide with Limburg school holidays, amplifying the impact on family travel and cross-border commuters heading to Germany and the Netherlands.

For employers, the disruption could hinder staff commuting to the Corda and Thor technology parks and complicate same-day business meetings in Liège’s aerospace cluster. Mobility managers may need to arrange car-pools or temporary tele-working options.

The €27 million investment is part of Belgium’s broader strategy to eliminate level crossings, boost line speeds and prepare the network for the EU-wide rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) by 2030.
