Uruguay’s Colonia del Sacramento Courts Brazilian Market Ahead of Summer 2025-26

Uruguay’s Colonia del Sacramento Courts Brazilian Market Ahead of Summer 2025-26
The UNESCO-listed town of Colonia del Sacramento spotlighted Brazil as its fastest-growing source market during the 8 November sessions at Festuris. Tourism director Martín Alvarez Ingold said Brazilian arrivals have risen sharply thanks to the town’s wine route, river-beach product and heritage appeal.

Brazilian travellers can reach Colonia by car via Uruguay’s well-maintained highways, by a one-hour flight from São Paulo to Montevideo followed by a 90-minute transfer, or—most popular—by ferry from Buenos Aires in just 50 minutes. The municipality has partnered with Buquebus and Seacat to offer discounted ferry-hotel packages aimed at Brazilian families.

Local authorities are investing in Portuguese-language signage, contactless payment infrastructure compatible with PIX, and a simplified event-permit process to attract Brazilian destination-weddings and corporate retreats. Plans for 2026 include a digital-nomad co-working hub leveraging Uruguay’s six-month tax holiday for remote workers.

Mobility planners should watch visa-exemption durations: Brazilians may stay up to 180 days per calendar year in Uruguay but must register with immigration if conducting remunerated activities. Colonia’s tourism board confirmed that cruise-ship calls will jump from 43 to 60 in the 2025-26 season, increasing weekend hotel compression.
